Never forget: Traffic is the fuel running your Internet business engine.

Your primary business goal is to create customers. I should say ‘create repeat customers’.  That is how you build a business paying you week after week, month after month, year after year. The key to selling online is traffic. Twitter ads generate good traffic and should be part of your marketing mix.

Anyone can sell something online. I have a revenue stream selling on Amazon and eBay. You can sell something online easily. Try it today. Look around your home or apartment for something of value that you no longer need. Put it on Craig’s List and I bet you sell it in a few days.

I mention Craig’s list because that is the easiest method. Run your ad. Then buyers contact you.  You meet and exchange the item for cash. No checks, please. Cash only.  

Although I and others make money selling on Amazon and other e-commerce sites, my sustainable business takes another direction. However, the process is similar.

In all my Internet businesses I seek to optimize and automate the processes. I use Buffer, a free utility, to post many times a day on social media. That’s automation.

Most likely your competitors pay attention to Search Engine Optimization. SEO is simply how to get more traffic directed to your offer by Google, Bing or some other search engine. More in this case means a higher ranking when a user searches using words associated with your product offer.

Let’s simplify SEO. The Internet is basically a method for connecting people with information. Search engines rapidly scan the Internet for information someone seeks.

They do this by sending bits of code called bots that look for what you seek. These bots crawl the web looking for data based on the keywords a person specifies in the search bar of a search engine.

Online marketers do not have to know the mechanics of search engines. They just have to know how to use them to benefit a  business or campaign. We tend to make too much of technology making Internet what it is.  Some use that complexity to their advantage selling how-to programs.

A basic key to optimizing your site for search engines is selecting the best keywords associated with your offer. I use a great keyword tool Long Tail Pro. It is inexpensive, easy to learn how to use, and gives me a competitive advantage in some crowded product niches.

I remember how difficult it once was finding things on the Internet. That changed when search engines like Google and Yahoo made it possible to find most anything on the web in seconds. While writing this I entered “most popular cattle breed in Kenya”  in Google and got 493,000 results an instant later.

Search engines make it easy for us to find information of all kinds whether video, text or images online. Internet marketers need to know to make it easy for customers to find their products online. That’s where keywords and search engines come into play.

Keywords are what we enter as a query in a search engine. Whether we use Google, Bing, Yahoo, YouTube or any other, the key to finding anything is accurate keywords. Think of my example above searching Kenyan cattle and how many different ways we can search that topic. English speakers do not all speak English alike. In the U.S. regional speech patterns result in different word sequences. Different urbans backgrounds do the same.

How would a cattle industry person query Kenyan cattle? Or an ecologist? Perhaps an economist would use different words entirely. The Internet marketer’s task is finding as many keywords as generally used for searching for a customer solution online. That’s a basis of SEO – Search Engine Optimization.

There are 40 or more tags attached to this post. Those tag words and phrases allow Internet users to find this post for information it contains. My Internet ads have many thousands of keywords in the ad structure. Most of those are long-tails.

Is Social Media Good for Business?

So you have a website, do you also need social media?

Yes, you do.

It’s good for business.

I’m active on virtually all popular social media sites. Each has its unique user types with some overlap. Users favor one social media over others. They may be active on several. But they favor one and spend more time with it.

I post to the most popular. This allows me to repurpose content. No reason to post only original content for each site. Simple headline changes are a must. Reworking some wordage is important.

These simple things give me better standing with Google and ranking. Google wants fresh, unique content. Taking a moment or two – and that’s all it takes – gets the job done. Google’s web crawling spiders like change to content, no matter how small.

I like social media’s immediacy. Something comes to mind and I post. I use Buffer. It allows me to schedule posts to several social sites at one time. I set social media posts for a week at a time.

There’s a strong return from social media. That’s especially true when followers share posts. The reach is exponential. I shared an item on Google+ that astounded me with the response.

Granted Google+ is not a priority. Many expect it to go away any hour. But this one graphic with a product link got nearly 20,000 clicks! I learned this only when checking my stats for that product and traced a jump to Google+.
