So you have a website you promote vigorously through paid advertising. Do you also need social media for online money-making success?

Yes, you do.

Social media is definitely good for business promotion. How often do you click on paid ads compared to considering offers shared on social media? Paid advertising value is not denied. However, when you provide social media content that’s shared your offer taps into a buyer’s psyche differently.

People just react differently to paid ads than they do when something is shared. Shared social media is more benign and friendly. Think of it as a friend speaking directly to you. A friend has a different tone than a commercial on TV or radio.

Consider TV ads with actors people like and speaking in a conversational tone. My unscientific research tells me target demographics listen more to an ad with a likable person talking to the viewer directly.

I don’t know how communications are taught these days, but when I was in school we were instructed to speak to one person when on camera or behind a microphone. Have a mental picture of that one person and speak directly to him/her.

If you’ve developed a profile of your ideal customer it includes a mental image. Some actually write a page or two describing their ideal customer. That person’s likes, dislikes, lifestyle, ambition, goals, social situation and so on. Many include physical descriptions, as well.

Your spoken and written voice must speak to that ideal customer. It’s true people do business with people they like. Your fans like you and the information you provide. Keep that in mind when you create content. Focus on your ideal customer.

How To Get More Customers

 

In conversation with associates recently a long forgotten book came to mind. Our discussion involved how target customers accept information.

I’m told we hear 20,000 – 30,000 every day. We spend more than half our day listening. Yet we remember only 20% or so of what we hear.

All of us filter what we hear. We actually tune out much of what people say to us. We automatically reject what we do not believe. Whether or not what we believe is true we reject opposing views.

How we learn is complex. What we remember and why we remember it is also complex. As marketers it is our job to break through the voice of judgement (VOJ) telling a target customer to reject something different from what they believe.

Breaking through that VOJ involves ‘positioning’. ‘Positioning’ is our effort to have our offer viewed as having a clear, unique, and advantageous position in the consumer’s mind.

You can make money while you sleep.

Sure, you can make money online while you sleep. Many of us do. However, you will not do that immediately by buying some big-promise money-making software or signing up to a money-making program.

Either of those things usually make money only for the people selling them.

Those who make money while sleeping have built businesses that generate income over different time zones all hours of the day. They are affiliate marketers, usually. That’s the easiest method for getting into an Internet business.

Do You Have A Tribe?

Working online means many hours in isolation. We sit at our laptop or desktop working at our online business. Usually at home or a handy place like Starbucks. Getting work done requires concentration and blocking out chatter and other people.

We’re social animals by nature and staying in touch digitally isn’t 100% satisfying. Our digital friends are part of our tribe – or we’re part of a larger tribe together. But nothing beats face-to-face contact. Shared experiences bring great rewards.
