I’m an example of someone who started a business on the side while working for someone else.
Many years ago I began consulting with entrepreneurs while director of marketing for a major aerospace defense corporation. My clients came to me. I gave freely of my ideas and how they could solve problems.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! One day I decided to charge for what I knew and began consulting. I consulted evenings and weekends. Pretty soon my business grew to the point I had to make a big decision. I left corporate life and became a full-time independent contractor.
I believe there are three key reasons to start a business on the side.
#1 There is a demonstrated demand for your expertise or product idea.
Like me, the business comes to you and kind of starts itself. Or you have a hobby and create things people ask for and are willing to pay to get.
Think about Famous Amos or Debbi Fields (Mrs. Fields Cookies).
An often-repeated business success saying is, “Find a need and fill it.” Sometimes the need finds you. I believe the greatest currency is information. What you know sets you apart from others.
One cannot know everything. When a need arises we turn to Google or YouTube for information. People in your circle may come to you with a problem. They know you can solve it. It is a quick exchange between friends and acquaintances.
At some point, you stop giving out information. Or you begin charging for it.
Examples
- A neighbor tinkered with electronic gizmos in his garage. Just because he enjoyed it. He came up with a device that several communications companies wanted to incorporate into their products. Then he started a business. And patented his device. Then sold manufacturing rights.
This fellow made a lot of money from that one idea. And he continued tinkering in his garage. He now has 30+ patents and tinkers away with a small development support staff.
- A friend’s interest in internal combustion engines of all kinds led him to develop an electronic ignition device. It could be easily installed by hobbyists. He gave some away then sold some to cover the cost of materials.
This led to starting a manufacturing company that became his primary income source.
- Several years ago a guy had an idea for selling discount books online. That competitor to Crown Books expanded. Crown Books closed all their brick-and-mortar stores and went out of business. The online seller was Amazon.
Jeff Bezos Startup Advice
“We are stubborn on vision. We are flexible on details…. We don’t give up on things easily. Our third-party seller business is an example of that. It took us three tries to get the third-party seller business to work. We didn’t give up.”
“If you’re not stubborn, you’ll give up on experiments too soon. And if you’re not flexible, you’ll pound your head against the wall and you won’t see a different solution to a problem you’re trying to solve.”
You are the expert.
Enter any room filled with people and most likely you know more of a subject than anyone else. We don’t give ourselves credit for what we know. And most of us do not know how to monetize our knowledge.
Click on this link for free membership in a club I recommend. This is a group of people already achieving success. They market what they know. This is Silver Level membership easily sold for $149 or more. I’m offering it to you for free because you are a reader of this blog.
This membership includes excellent training to move you along the success path.
#2 You need extra income.
You may not want to run a business of your own. But you need to pay unexpected bills. Even with good planning, we may come up short once in a while. The quick way is to get a second job. But that’s just trading more hours for more money.
Working for other people gives me a headache. Associating with others making money online gives me joy. I believe everyone needs an income stream outside of trading hours for dollars. I work enjoyable hours developing my Internet business.
This blog is just one part of my online business. It earns for me. I like writing and helping others get started online. Your success is important to me.
Have you noticed I haven’t sold you anything? That’s not the purpose of this blog. I do provide links to resources I believe will help you improve your business. Some are free. Some require payment.
I want you to benefit from my experience and advice. I have other sites that sell stuff. Here is where I offer information to help you make money online.
So, rather than taking a second job start making money on the Internet. Create a sustainable Internet-based income stream. One that lets you work when and where you want.
That means starting your own business. It is fairly easy to learn how to earn money on the side without taking a low-paying job at a big box store of one kind or another.
#3 You have an idea you want to monetize.
Some of us get ideas that go beyond the hobby stage. We are convinced they can be profitable. Our situation does not allow us to quit our job. We begin developing our idea by monetizing it as the goal. We simply want to make money and think this is the path.
What you need is a way to develop your ideas. Turning them into money-making products. Click on this link for a free membership in a club for people like you. There is no cost and no obligation. This is simply access to information showing you how to turn your idea into a money-making situation.
Think for a moment about Walt Disney. His name may not mean as much to you as it does to me. I never met the man. Yet I’m encouraged by what he achieved. From early animation to the valuable company carrying his name Walt exploited his ideas.
Many years ago Disney had a television program. He announced the creation of Southern California’s Disney Land theme part. On that program, Walt explained the project. He presented his vision. Disney showed progress in building his idea.
This dreamer came on the scene with the November 1928 release of “Steamboat Willie.” This animated short introduced the Mickey Mouse character. Nearly 100 years later the Walt Disney Company is worth more than 300 billion dollars.
I especially like Disney’s quote, “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.”

What are your money-making options?
The easiest way to make money is working for someone else. Employers take the risk and all you have to do is show up and do what they tell you to do. The better way is to have your own business. The Internet is the most cost-effective place to do that.
Sure you can sell personal stuff on Craigs List or eBay. But there are better ways to create sustainable income. A good side hustle brings in cash every day. I’m what is known as an affiliate marketer. Click on that link for a short video explanation of affiliate marketing.
There are many other ways to make money online.
- Sell your services on Upwork or Fiverr.
- A secret for using Fiverr.com is sell a service and have the work done by someone on Fiverr. Pretty slick way to earn.
- Open a WooCommerce site and sell products created by others.
- You can include Amazon products, digital products, and many affiliate relationships.
- Big stores such as Lowe’s, Home Depot, Walmart, and Bass Pro Shops have affiliate programs.
- Create eBooks and sell them online.
- This is easier than you may think. Find books with expired copyright and sell them under your own brand.
- Go to Gutenberg.org or this article describing out-of-copyright.
- There are many sites listing out-of-copyright books and how you may use them to earn money.
Use your imagination. Virtually anything can be sold on the Internet. And many, many businesses offer affiliate programs. Remember the big 3 niches: relationships, money, and health. Use the short list below from Authority Hacker to generate ideas.

A tremendous advantage of working online is you have virtually no overhead. There are costs, but those costs are easily managed if you have an extra $100 or so a month to get started.
Another advantage is you can work from anywhere. Even your smartphone at the beach. I’ve run my business from Internet cafes in England, Germany, Egypt, Poland, and many other locales.
The big online business challenge is learning how to do it. That’s where people like me come in. I earn on the Internet via affiliate marketing. And earn more teaching people how to make money on the Internet.
Conclusion
- You need to make at least 6% more next year to stay even with inflation.
- To get ahead of the inflation curve you must bring in 10% – 15% more next year.
- It is easy to start a side hustle if you approach it as a business.
- Recognize your strengths and exploit them.
- Learn from others how to monetize what you know.
