I ignored SEO for many years. Thinking good content was all I needed. Today’s competitive digital marketplace demands more than good content. The Internet is an open-air market where anyone can hawk their jams and jellies.
Your goal is to be noticed. You want to attract buyers. With a brick-and-mortar business, people drive past your location daily. What causes them to stop and visit a retail store?
You’ve seen the gimmicks. Sign spinners, banners, and inflated gizmos. Potential customers come because of proper marketing. Good PR, solid advertising, word of mouth, and community promotions motivate potential customers to stop and visit.
The goal is when a target customer has a problem you can solve they think of you first. Several years ago I read a sensational book Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind.
This is the first book to deal with the problems of communicating to a skeptical, media-blitzed public, Positioning describes a revolutionary approach to creating a “position” in a prospective customer’s mind-one that reflects a company’s own strengths and weaknesses as well as those of its competitors. This book explains how to:
-
- Make and position an industry leader so that its name and message wheedle their way into the collective subconscious of your market and stay there
- Position a follower so that it can occupy a niche not claimed by the leader
Position Your Offer
Putting your brand in the subconscious of your niche buyers takes time. Think of market leaders. Which brand comes to mind when I suggest getting a pizza? Domino’s most likely. Yet Domino’s sells convenience. The pizza is okay. But the convenience of delivery is what you are buying.
Malcolm Gladwell in his book Outliers writes about the time to reach your goal. He’s citing the time working at your craft. Not the time spent waiting for the eggs to hatch.
What about your website? How do you attract potential buyers? What do you offer that competitors do not? What makes someone think of your brand first? What are you doing to be a power in your niche?
If I mention Tony Robbins virtually everyone recognizes the name. But does he come to mind when you have a problem? That depends on the problem.
We search for answers. We Google.
Here’s a bit of homework. Go to any selling website. Analyze the site. What is compelling in the layout? What is there making you want to return? A few days after write down the URL. Do you even remember it?
Do the same with your primary site. Does it give me a reason to return? Does it give me the information I may need to remember your product? What problem does it solve? Is there a compelling reason for anyone to visit your site?
How do we get Google to rank us higher than competitors?
SEO. Search Engine Optimization. That’s the answer.
Most targets give up their email address just to get your free lead magnet. These people rarely buy anything. I’ve learned a deep dive into SEO brings greater returns than many advertising programs. It helps attract serious buyers.
