Fake It ‘Til You Make It

Posted on April 2, 2024

“Fake it till you make it” is an aphorism that suggests that by imitating confidence, competence, and an optimistic mindset, a person can realize those qualities in their real life and achieve the results they seek. The phrase is first attested sometime before 1973.

It was a method for motivating oneself to higher levels of achievement. But does that positive attitude work today? Whether working a job or managing a business it’s easy to get a case of the blahs. And back peddle accepting what comes your way.

Some say lack of motivation is due to low-level depression. Perhaps. But, there are methods for working your way to positive thinking.

Here are some strategies to help you stay motivated:

  • Set Clear Goals: Define clear and achievable goals for yourself. Having something to work towards can give you a sense of purpose and direction.
  • Find Meaning: Connect with the purpose behind your work. Understanding how your role contributes to the bigger picture can make your tasks feel more meaningful.
  • Celebrate Achievements: Acknowledge your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. Celebrating milestones can boost your confidence and motivation.
  • Seek Feedback: Regular feedback can help you understand your strengths and areas for improvement. It can also validate your efforts and keep you motivated to excel.
  • Stay Organized: Keep your workspace tidy and organize your tasks efficiently. A clutter-free environment can help reduce stress and increase focus.
  • Take Breaks: Don’t forget to take regular breaks throughout the day. Stepping away from your work can help prevent burnout and keep you feeling refreshed and motivated.
  • Stay Positive: Cultivate a positive mindset and focus on the aspects of your job that you enjoy. Try to reframe challenges as opportunities for growth.
  • Continuous Learning: Invest in your personal and professional development. Learning new skills or expanding your knowledge can keep your job interesting and challenging.
  • Find Support: Build relationships with your coworkers and seek support from your manager or mentor when needed. A supportive network can help you navigate challenges and stay motivated.
  • Balance Work and Life: Maintain a healthy work-life balance to prevent feeling overwhelmed or burnt out. Make time for activities outside of work that bring you joy and fulfillment.

Remember that motivation can fluctuate, and it’s normal to have ups and downs. By incorporating these strategies into your routine, you can cultivate a more consistent sense of motivation and satisfaction in your job.
