If you can speak you can podcast!
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! There really is little to it. A podcasting friend records his weekly podcast while driving using his smartphone. Others choose to setup a studio in their home office. That could be a corner of the bedroom or the dining room table.
Getting Started
Only the most successful podcasters use exotic setups. That is not necessary. You can get a quality starter kit for under $100 and record directly to your desktop or laptop. I use Audacity, a free software that allows me to record, edit and control content.
I record using an inexpensive headset USB port connected microphone purchased from Amazon. I like it because this mic is noise cancelling and very comfortable. I prefer full cushion over the ear headsets.
Many podcasters start with a full kit setup. That’s a great way to start. It is cost effective compared to adding pieces as you progress. However, I suggest a decent, inexpensive headset mic plugged into your computer’s USB port recording into Audacity. Whatever you do do not use your computer’s built in mic. You can upgrade equipment later once you get some experience. So, don’t get in over your head with start up expenses. Perhaps you may benefit from doing some research before moving ahead. Amazon has many how-to books on podcasting. Use the highlighted link to visit that online library and check out what would help you most.
The idea behind podcasting is to expand your message reach. I recommend that you not focus initially on podcasting to make money from the podcast. That can come later. What you want to do at the beginning is simply learn another avenue to get your message to the Internet audience. You want to get started and publish your content. Too often we get bogged down in technical stuff we don’t understand. That wastes time. It also contributes to missed opportunities. You want to capitalize on the moment, striking while the iron is hot, as was once said.
Content
Now, what is your content? If you blog all you have to do is read a blog post in a conversational voice. Don’t always stick to the script. Talk to a friend. Keep their image in mind as you speak. Or have a photo of someone you like and speak to that image.
I encourage you to create content you believe in. Be true to yourself and your goals. I do not promote products I would not use. I seek solutions to customer problems. I give my best advice and stay away from what I don’t know.
Recording
Do not worry about how you sound. The idea is to get your message out in your voice. I’m turned off by podcasters who manipulate the microphone with heavy bass tones or other gimmicks.
Be yourself. You’ll find your ‘voice’ and delivery style. Success comes from being you, not imitating someone else. The key is getting started. You need private time to practice speaking into whichever mic you choose. And you need to be comfortable with recording software.
Take your time learning. Practice recording and editing. Then record a couple of episodes before launching online. Oh, another thing is make your first episode something about yourself. A simple background is all you need. People do business with people they like. Use a conversational tone and just tell who you are.
No one likes the sound of their own voice.
Don’t worry about that. Concentrate on getting the recording down. Listen to some top ranked podcasts. Don’t copy them, just understand the hosts have spent years perfecting podcasting skills. Something you may keep in mind is when practice recording don’t use a script. Talk into the mic telling something about your life, present or past.
Think about that creating an image in your mind. Doing so changes your voice giving it sincerity. You become more likable in tone. Smile as you speak into the mic. That also changes your tone. Keep it light. Focus on one person when you speak. Keep that person’s image in your head. Make it someone you know. Talk to that person, not to the computer or script in front of you.
Conclusion
There are many people online making a good living from podcasting. Most incorporate podcasts into their marketing mix, as do I. Search online and learn what they have to say. There’s a lot of free advice online. Don’t try doing too many things at once. If you have a blog or sales site develop that platform. Once it is established record your posts and product descriptions and get the recordings online. Your Internet entrepreneur goal is to create customers. That’s it. A customer returns and you want to have your online presence an open invitation for that to happen.
